Action for Children

Opportunity Description – 15 volunteer mentors are needed across the Highlands to volunteer for around 4 hours a week (for a minimum of 12 months) with young people between the ages of 8-14 years.

Organisation Information – This project aims to support young people 12-17 who are currently misusing alcohol/drugs. The young people are supported in their local communities.

Opportunity Description – Unlike standard retail outlets, our stores offer a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of the retail operation. Our Volunteer Retail Assistants are trained to undertake a wide range of activities including: * Providing strong customer service. * Serving customers at the till. * Taking receipt of stock donations from the public, thanking them for their generosity and finding out if they are Gift Aid Donors. * Signing up new Gift Aid Donors (this raises an extra 25p per pound for Barnardo’s from the sale of donations and does not cost donors anything). * Replenishing stock by making sure our rails and shelves are well-stocked, visually appealing and tidy. * Merchandising throughout the store. * Stock preparation including sorting, steaming and pricing. * Possible administrative tasks such as stocktaking. * If you have a particular skill or interest, our team would be delighted to discuss how you could utilise it in store! This could range from computer skills to collectables knowledge, fundraising experience to fashion awareness – whatever your talent, please share it with us! All volunteers receive great training, support and make a real difference.

Today, the charity runs over 60 services in the country, in partnership with other organisations, supporting over 8,000 of Scotland’s most vulnerable children, young people and families who face disadvantage because of issues like educational breakdown, HIV, disability, abuse, homelessness and poverty.

Stock Room Assistant

Driver/Office Help/ Support Volunteer

Crocus Group

Opportunity Description – Crocus Group are looking for –
Daytime Drivers to transport young people to and from 1-1 support appointments at the Crocus Group offices.
Office help to be present on the premises during support appointments, help with light cleaning and admin duties.
Support Volunteers to take part in group support sessions, helping children and young people to express their grief and be listened to.

Organisation Information – Crocus Group is a support service for bereaved children and young people in Highland. We rely on volunteers to be able to run the service. Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, all with the common interest in helping children and families who are grieving. Sorting Donations Volunteer

Opportunity Description – Donated goods can be anything from baby and toddler clothes, toys, books , maternity wear and small equipment to buggies, prams, cots etc. All of our donated items are weighed on entering the building, so we have accurate records of how much – and what type – of donations we are receiving and then moved to one of three dedicated sorting rooms, dependant on the type of item.

Opportunity Description – Customers of our Shop or Online Shop often contact us asking if we have items in stock that they are looking for – they can do this directly by submitting the form on our website. Also if someone visits the shop and doesn’t find what they are looking for straight away, we always suggest that we can add a request to hopefully help them out at a later time as new stock is received and processed.

Opportunity Description – The Everything Baby premises comprise a three-story building on Church Street in Inverness which houses a retail space, stock rooms, event space and offices.

We completed a shop refurbishment and refit in July 2014 but as always, with a rush to get things finished and ready for a deadline, we have a list of small tasks that need finishing off – as well as ongoing small maintenance jobs.

DIY Hero’s pop in for an hour or two here and there to put up shelves, build small display aids like plinths and racks, put together flat pack furniture etc

Bumps and Babies/Toddler Group Volunteer

NCT Highlands and Islands (Gaidhealtachd)

Opportunity Description – We’re looking for new volunteers to help us run our local Bumps & Babies/Toddler Group. This involves, setting up the toys and chairs at the venue, preparing refreshments, warmly welcoming parents, interacting with parents and ensuring they and their little ones and comfortable, helping clear away at the end of the session. The role can also include helping to promote the group through E-mail, Facebook, the branch’s website and creating and distributing posters and flyers throughout the city.

You’ll be part of a team of volunteers that run the local branch of the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) and who support each other in their roles. You’ll also receive information and support from NCT’s staff volunteering team.

Organisation Information – NCT is here to support parents. We give them accurate, impartial information so that they can decide what’s best for their family, and we introduce them to a network of local parents to gain practical and emotional support. We are the UK’s largest parenting charity, and campaign as the voice for parents on the issues they care about.

Reach4Reality

Opportunity Description – To befriend and support young people with a social communication difficulty on outdoor activity breaks.

Organisation Information – Reach4Reality is a small Christian voluntary organisation which seeks to improve outcomes for young people, living in the Highland area, who have social and communication challenges such as autism. Reach4Reality organises activity days and weekends for up to 4 young people at a time, accessing various outdoor activity centres in Highland. Volunteers work alongside young people, in a ratio of one-to -one, to support the young people on activities to develop their confidence and social skills within a holistic view of health and wellbeing.

Volunteer Play Services – NHS Highland Children’s Unit

Opportunity Description The volunteers will help provide children 0-16 years of age with activities games, arts and crafts and generally play with the children within the ward and sometimes at outpatients clinics. They also give parents and carers a break from looking after their child.

Inverness Eczema Outreach Scotland

Opportunity Description – We are looking for volunteers who would like to join our friendly team and get experience in working with children with additional needs. You will entertain children aged between 5 to 11 years old for three hours with activities, while the parents/carers attend support group meetings. Activities will include; entertaining the children with activities for the session / helping to prepare snacks and drinks / assisting with tidying up / reporting any concerns or problems to staff members.

Organisation Information – Eczema Outreach (Scotland) is the support charity for families affected by eczema in Scotland and focuses on children with the condition and their carers.” Whilst we cannot provide medical advice, we help our families in many ways, from practical advice with school or benefits, emotional support, family outings, peer-groups, children’s challenges and much more.

Child Contact Centre Volunteer

Relationship Scotland – Family Mediation Highland

Opportunity Description Volunteers work with the Contact Centre Co-ordinator and other volunteers at our centre in Inverness to provide a welcoming atmosphere. The help to set up the centre with a wide range of appropriate play equipment and support parents and children, putting them at ease during their time with us. Volunteers who are able to offer 4 1/2 hours once a month on a Saturday are now being sought.

Organisation Information Family Mediation Highland aims to lessen the trauma and distress of family break-up in order to help separated parents and wider family members work together to reach their own decisions about issues concerning their children arising from parental separation. Also, to assist children and young people, affected by parental separation, come to terms with their changing family situation.
